Taiana's Textiles

All photographs from Taiana Gieffer

It's not often that I get wrapped up in something like textile design, unless it's say, Rodarte related. Well, the left-coast Swiss Textile Award winners have another California native at their heels named Taiana Gieffer, and for some reason I have a feeling that this young lady just might follow a similar rise as the Mulleavy sisters. Taiana's current collection of scarves and custom fabrics experiments with the different personalities that the fibers of merino wool can take, and her pieces have a dense textural feel. She makes each of her pieces by hand, designing with a focus on the interplay of color and shape to create forms that are almost sculptural. Only 21 years old, Taiana's custom fabrics have already appeared in Francisco Costa's designs for the Calvin Klien Fall 09 collection, and are also sold at the Rick Owens store. Not bad, considering the nonsense I was doing when I was 21 (which didn't involve that much creating, and but did involve being over-occupied with plenty of worthless boys). Anyway, I would love to get my hands on one of these scarves for Fall, imagine how warm they would be...
