This American Life

I don't know about you, but I've been feeling a strong whiff of Americana lingering in many of the Spring collections. It started while I was in Stockholm, of all places, and continued through NYFW. If you haven't noticed already, just keep your eyes open, it goes so well with the big seventies trend that's also going on right now. I personally think it has to do with finally having a President that we can feel proud of--I know that having Mr. O in the White House has allowed me to put aside all the residual American shame I've carried along with me for so many years.

That said, what could be more American than blue jeans? I stopped by denim brand Charley 5.o's showroom last week to take a look at both their fall and spring collections, where I was happy to find many seventies-inspired pieces (once again, combining both trends). Honestly, I'm not much of a jeans person, since I can never ever find pants that fit my super-short proportions, but luckily there were plenty of other denim garments on view outside of your basic jeans. I fell hard for a high-waisted denim maxi-skirt, as well as the romper, and left with a classic chambray button-down, a basic wardrobe staple that I plan on wearing all fall.

I ended up wearing it out on Wednesday night to the Spin Magazine CMJ party, where my friends The Drums were DJing. I paired it with my Risto skirt, which reminds me of Walter De Maria's Lightning Field in New Mexico (a classic monument of American beauty), and my favorite floppy hat for that seventies feel. It seemed appropriate attire since it was an All-American night, complete with ping-pong, Mike's Hard Lemonade, and the boys wearing their uniform of vintage Nike sweatshirts and varsity jackets. Nicollette also showed up wearing her seventies best, inspired by Almost Famous, with a vintage floral dress, fur vest, and clog boots. Here are some pictures from the Charley 5.0 lookbook, as well as some photos from my night.
