Cold Cave: Ann Yee Autumn Winter 2012

New York Fashion Week isn't really known for fostering up and coming young designers in the same way as London, or some of the smaller fashion weeks around the world, as it's usually more commercially oriented. Nonetheless, I think New York's independent labels are doing an incredible job of pushing themselves further this season, and experimenting more, while still maintaining a very conscious awareness of the consumer and the bottom line.

Ann Yee is an excellent example. I've been following Yee's development over the past few seasons, and this collection is by far my favorite.  Inspired by the textures and shapes of caves, Yee incorporated a stunning mineral print, as well as using cave inspired silhouettes, cuts, and colors.  Highlights include a 90's skater style dress updated with a jagged asymmetrical hem, a hybrid short/skirt (but not skort) number with the aforementioned mineral print, and a gorgeous cocktail dress made from layered panels of different colored silk.  While conceptual, the collection is still immensely wearable and layerable--basically what I want to live in when next fall rolls around.
