Aapo Has a Blog

My long-distance-BFF Aapo is a man of few words, so when he restarted his blog, it made sense for him to switch over to Tumblr. While I'm going to miss the random assortment of teenage party Polaroids that populated his long defunct blogger site (a throwback to when I first met Aapo at STEREO), his new site is undeniably more refined, featuring his work as a stylist in Stockholm and Helsinki. Ironically, just as I plan my move to Stockholm--I will be temporarily relocating there in November while Jimmy goes to grad school--Aapo decided to move back to Helsinki. I am already planning on making many Drunk Boat visits back and forth, but am happy that in the meantime I can follow his going-ons, and his signature style. See you soon Aapo!

Side Hustle

Almost every young designer I know still has a day job, or does freelance work on the side. We ourselves have too many side hustles to even name or keep track of. My good friend Gorjan Lauseger is one half of the design team behind Odeur, but he still does a lot of work as a stylist. The last time I was in Stockholm, I bumped into him doing a shoot on the Liljeholmen Bridge during the day, while he was putting the finishing touches on the Odeur collection and preparing for the runway show during the evening. Aspiring designers take note, you have to work very hard to make it in this industry. Yesterday he sent over the link to his styling portfolio, and I thought I would share some of my favorite images with you.

Day to Night

Daytime: Topshop Unique cardigan, Future Classics top, Minimarket shorts, American Apparel bra, Marc x Marc Jacobs flats, Antti Asplund necklaces.

During the day I usually favor bright colors and patterns or over-accessorized Luella Bartley styled feminine attire, but during the night, I spend 4-5 nights a week out at places where the only colors that the eye can register are black and white. Therefore my nightlife clothing (outside of our matching 66Sick outfits) usually consists of various shades of black, white and grey, with flashes of gold and silver, and I usually prefer cutting a really strong silhouette than making a bold color statement. It's such a drastic contrast to what I usually wear during the day, that I believe that most people who only see me out at night wouldn't recognize me if they bumped into me in my diurnal attire. Actually, I know this because it happens like, once a day. I guess I live a double life, at least sartorially speaking, with the only thing remaining consistent being a slight streak of mental insanity. Still, there are a few pieces in my closet that transition well from day to night, and can fit my dual style personalities. One piece is my Future Classics top, which I bought at Opening Ceremony a couple of years ago. I wore the above outfit all day while I wandered around Williamsburg window shopping yesterday, and then changed it up a little to make it more appropriate for our night out hosting at TriBeCa Grand.

Screaming Mimis Fashion Week Window!

Tah Dah!

My favorite styling projects for the store are the windows. Our windows are somewhat legendary and the pressure is always on to kill it. I work with the amazingly talented Eric Vidmar who designs the window itself and the owner, Laura Wills as the art director.

The fashion week display is my faaaaaaavorite one to do! (Obvsies!) Its when I turn on my A-game and really try to convey how relevant vintage is to modern fashion. I start by studying the Vogue Collections and pick looks that speaks to the cutting-edge downtown girl and that is a big statement to the fashion season. Here are my styling inspirations:

Yohji Yamamoto. I mean, this look is SO New York, which is perfect because its for the KCD-type check-in girl!

Givenchy. I'm obsessed with a light-colored denim/chambray and leather look. The contrast is just so cool.

Marc Jacobs. Honestly, I never readily admit any adoration for MJ because I think he's so obnoxious. I mean, F/W 08?? GROSSSS! But the more I worked on this look, the more I liked it. I'm a texture fienddd and I really liked the 80s lurex with cotton plaids. And the Mary Poppins referrence was pretty rad.

Here's the outcome...

For the Yohji look, I didn't get too literal because I really wanted to show a jumpsuit, is they are everyyyywhere this season. My favorite part is the rolled up ankles revealing the polka dot leggings. With the little boys' blazer, it made for a really rad Japanese-y silhouette.

Leather Chaps!! Oh my!! I'm not sure how many girls are going to banging down our door for a casual pair of leather chaps, but I got my point across. Denim and leather rulessss.

As for the boy, I'm still hung up on the Adam Kimmel jumpsuits a couple seasons ago. Sooooo good.

My MJ girl ended up being my favorite! It the metallics with the plaid looks so new and I really like the lurex cumberbund layered with the belts. And of course, the black laquered straw hat!

And, yes, that issss a pearl bottle holder. AMAZINGGGG!!
