For Fall 2011, Julie Haus was inspired by the Martin Scorsese film Boxcar Bertha, the story of two train robbers and lovers in the 1930's American South. The collection fuses romantic draping with modern cuts and digital prints, which all seem directly inspired by the movie. Although the prints are taken from images of railroads, Texas landscapes, and calla lilies, they are abstracted beyond immediate recognition, and have a washed-out, dreamlike effect, evoking the idea of the image that they represent rather than directly showing it. I love the way that the entire collection conjures up the dusty feel of a very particular period of American history, without feeling overly referential or vintage inspired.
