Sequined asymmetrical dress at Leila ShamsWhile many of the designers I saw went for a more pared-down or minimalist aesthetic this season, somebody still needs to make outrageous party dresses for us professional party girls. Both Leila Shams and Norman Ambrose seemed to be swept up by the seventies disco-decadence of Studio 54, and their collections overflowed with rich colors, over-the-top embellishment, and flying feathers and fur. Norman Ambrose's take seemed more directly vintage inspired, with jewel and sequin adorned ensembles that wouldn't look out of place on young Bianca Jagger, or Mahogany-era Diana Ross (go rent the movie if you haven't already!). Leila Shams gave a more updated (and more downtown) take on the traditional slinky dress, incorporating her signature digital prints, which featured jewel-toned giant beetles, forests, and classical sculptures. None of these looks is really suited for everyday wear, but at a party, the last thing you want to do is blend in with the crowd.
