I first discovered Suzanne Rae at one of my favorite New York stores, EVA, and immediately fell in love with her gorgeously restrained silk pieces. For Spring 2011, Rae was inspired by Jack Kerouac's On the Road, as well as western film, the vastness of America, and the open possibilities that the country offers. While I have seen many designers attempt Americana on the Swedish runways with varying success, I have to say, nobody does it quite as well as an actual American. While most American inspired collections end up looking like watered down Ralph Lauren, Suzanne Rae managed to build a show that evoked the romance of the Midwest, cowboys, classic cars, and the dust bowl, without looking vintage inspired. In fact, even though each piece had a rugged desert feel, they were all entirely modern looking, in part because of the experimental draping, and the luxe silk and ecofriendly hemp materials, which were all showcased against the wood-paneled walls of The Standard. Highlights included a flamenco style purple dress, a hand silkscreened poncho trimmed with rope, and a pair of trousers printed with convertibles and cacti. I also loved the Dieppa Restrepo brogues and the Yestadt Millinery hats that were used to perfectly accessorize the show.
