Let me start by saying that I've been pretty much obsessed with McTega since seeing their rainbow-colored resin baubles in Nylon Magazine a year or two ago. Created by science majors, and former Rodarte interns Sarah McLellan and Kristina Ortega, the line started as a jewelry collection, but has since evolved into a small collection of clothing and accessories. As a jewelry designer, I'm pretty much blown away by the process, which involves hand pouring each piece of resin, making every single design unique, and getting to see all the intricacies and color differentiations in person at their presentation was a real treat. The designers revealed that figuring out how to make each piece involves plenty of trial and error, and fooling around which often yields surprisingly gorgeous results, much like a science experiment. Most often the plastics develop into natural crystal looking formations, psychedelic stones, or glassy looking sculptures. The clothing was designed in similar manner, growing organically, yet following a precise pattern, echoing the growth of crystals and gemstones in nature.
