Educate Yourself

Embroidery class at Lena Corwin Studio

One of my favorite things to do when I have a little extra time on my hands, and a little extra cash in my bank account is to take classes in subjects I never had time to study. I started my career as a jewelry designer by taking a course from a local designer (who has since moved to L.A.) and then introductory evening courses at F.I.T. for a semester, before eventually deciding to get an Associates Degree in the subject. For those of you who live in New York, I highly recommend taking a look at the F.I.T. program, as it is very reasonably priced, and gives you an incredible base of technical skills.

If you aren't willing to commit yourselves for an entire semester, or are looking for craftier skills, I've also discovered Lena Corwin's studio classes in Brooklyn, which are taught by local artists and designers. The classes range from basic sewing and screen printing courses, to quirkier classes focusing on doll making and paper chandelier construction. I'm personally very interested in the upcoming Tie-Dye course taught by designer Shabd Simon-Alexander, who is known for her gorgeous collection of hand-dyed garments. I know plenty of you have commented on your lack of D.I.Y. skills, and I highly suggest getting your feet wet with one of these classes--who knows what hidden talents you might discover! Here is the list of upcoming classes for Spring, email info@lenacorwin.com for more information, or to sign up!
