66S Flashback: We Did It Before Margiela

66Sick outfits from May 2007.

I always get plenty of comments, both positive and negative, about my Martin Margiela bra leotard.  I was talking about it with Christina the other day, when I said, "Hey, you know, we did that whole look before Margiela did it."  We've been through so many different looks, and it was so long ago that we nearly forgot about it, but I thought it might be time to dig up some of pictures from that night.

Originally, Christina had been inspired by the image of Trent Reznor bound up, blindfolded and writhing around in the Nine Inch Nails music video for Closer.  The problem was that Trent appeared topless, wearing nothing but opera length gloves. How were we going to achieve this look without actually baring all?  I started by picking up some nude high waisted body shaping shorts from Century 21, and Christina bought some American Apparel nude bandeau bras for the top.  We finished the look with Blueblockers from Duane Reade (in place of Trent's blindfold), black opera length gloves from the district, and YSL gladiator heels.  Whenever I look back at these photos, I almost automatically think of Margiela, but then I remember, we were just dressing up as one of our favorite male music icons for the night...

Doing my best Trent.

The original source of inspiration: Trent Reznor blindfolded and writhing around in the music video for Closer.

A look from Maison Martin Margiela's Spring 08 collection, complete with Blueblocker style wrap around shades, which he showed in October 2007,  five months after we did our take.

Catching Up On My Addictions

I'm a bit under the weather today, and I don't have the energy to do a real post, so I thought I would do some catching up.  First, I want to thank Jane from Sea of Shoes for listing us as one of her Favorite Blogs right now.  Jane is such an awesome source of inspiration, with a reach of knowledge and culture that extends way beyond fashion, and ranges from Tony Duquette to Corbu (two of my own favorites).

Second, Laura from PUG and PIPS tagged me to list my five addictions. Since I've become a professional party girl, relaxing and staying at home has become quite precious to me, so forgive me if my addictions are more along the homely lines.  Here it goes:

1. DIY Rodarte.  Having been successful with my last 3 projects, I have become so obsessed with doing the Rodarte knit (which is not only easy, but quite therapeutic) that I'm afraid that if the Mulleavy Sisters find out, they will slap me with a Restraining Order.  Okay, so I might not be dressing up as Kate or Laura, but my husband noted last night, "Whoa, what are you doing?  Are you trying to make the whole outfit?"  Yes sir, I am.  I have some really good DIYs coming up, this is just a small sneak preview....

2. Hot Chocolate.  The only reason I've been leaving my house during this month-long arctic chill is going down to the Starbucks (I know, I'm so lame, but I swear they put opiates in that stuff so you keep on coming back) and ordering a Salted Caramel Hot Chocolate or a Peppermint Mocha Twist.  I can't wait till it's February and Hot Chocolate month at City Bakery.

3. Pandora Radio.  I don't think I can live without my Pandora.  Whenever Jimmy touches the dial to change it, I scream.  It's like College Radio catered to your own personal taste.  You type in your favorite bands, and they make a radio station around the band, and play similar artists.  You can further refine the selection that they present by clicking on whether you like the song that they play or not.  The radio stations that I've been listening to the most: Architecture in Helsinki, Animal Collective, David Bowie, Fleet Foxes, The Knife, Le Loup, and Magnetic Fields.

4. Gossip Girl.  My friend Jonas once told me that my most attractive addiction was humidifiers, and my least attractive addiction was eggs.  He might have to retract that statement after he hears about Gossip Girl.  This is the addiction I might go to hell for, especially since I went to one of the all New York private schools that the show is based on, and should be way beyond the trifling teenagers and mean girls of yesteryear.  It's so real, and it's so not, and even if this season has gotten absurdly soapy, it doesn't mean that I'm going to stop watching it, or that I'm not completely stoked to hear about the ridic Rufus-meets-Lily spinoff series in the works....

5. Bloglovin.  I know this is the second website I listed, which means I really need to get out of my house and away from my computer (and television!), but I seriously check this site almost as much as I check my email.  Ha, I think I just made myself gag.  All my favorite blogs (see the links to the right!) in one place---better than a subscription to WWD.

Now I tag Pamala, Mariane, Ginny, Alfie, and Lulu.

ELLE Galan 2009 Winners

Yesterday night was the annual ELLE Galan, a huge party and awards ceremony at Grand Hotel in Stockholm, celebrating Swedish fashion.  You'll probably see more pictures of the actual event on the Swedish fashion blog circuit pretty soon, and you can find the complete list in Swedish on the Elle website, but in the meantime (and if you don't speak Swedish) here are some of the winners.

International Designer of the Year: Luella Bartley.  The Swedes always have a sentimental love for the Brits, and this year they celebrated the saccharinely sweet designs of Luella, as "British fashion at it's best."  I have to admit that I'm also quite enamoured with the Spring 09 collection.

Fashion Designer of the Year: Fifth Avenue Shoe Repair.  Not to sound like a Fifth Avenue Shoe Repair stalker, since this is the third time I've posted about them in a row, but I'm very happy to see them receiving the attention that they deserve.  The line, which was picked up last year by Opening Ceremony, and last season by Barneys, is finally getting its time in the spotlight, and was lauded for its experimentation and hypercreativity.

H&M Stipend Newcomer of the Year: Noir et Blanc.  I also wrote about this line last month, and have to say that they're one of the most distinctive and exciting brands amongst some very talented competition.  Their win was based on their strong knowledge of textiles and prints, and their ability to cater to a young and trendy public.

Best Dressed Woman of the Year: Lykke Li.  Lykke Li was one of my favorite artists of 2008, and even though her music was way overplayed at the Spring 09 fashion shows, I never get tired of listening to her, and the video for Breaking It Up is one of the best videos to watch before going out.  Not only is her outfit awesome, but so are her dance moves.

Best Dressed Man of the Year: Håkan Hellström.  Okay, so I have to admit that we were *slightly* disappointed that it wasn't Jimmy's best friend, Oskar, who won the Cafe.se "Sweden's Best Dressed Common Man" contest.  Hahahah.  I actually don't think I can say much for Håkan's personal style (although he does look quite cute in his sailor shirt, no?), but I do love his music. Känn Ingen Sorg För Mig Göteborg is my favorite song of his.  He's also helpful to listen to if you're trying to learn Swedish...
