yc: ying chu Spring 11 Preview Party

Starting this Thursday at Anchor Bar (330 Spring St.) from 11-3pm, Christina and I will be launching a new bi-weekly party featuring our favorite local designers and stores, including many of the talented people who have been featured on this blog. For our first night, we will be holding a Spring preview party for our friend Ying Chu, who I wrote about earlier this month. Our hope is to promote local and emerging talent, and if you have any suggestions for designers who would be a good fit, send them over! If you are in New York, I hope you can join us, and take a look at the pieces from his Spring collection in person. There will be drink specials, and if you introduce yourself to me, I'll make you a drink too!

Road Trippin'

As I've mentioned before, one of the big trends I've noticed recently is Americana, and more specifically, a renewed fascination with the American Southwest. When I've mentioned this to my industry friends several of them have looked at me askance and questioned when I decided that I was qualified to be a trend forecaster. I never said I was qualified, but I do have a pair of beady little eyes, and I see it everywhere I look, whether it's the current obsession with heritage brands like Pendleton, or the recent incorporation of the kitchy dream catcher motifs into jewelry. Even the Mulleavy sisters took a road trip across Texas and were influenced by border towns for the current Rodarte collection.

Anyway, I could continue on with the examples, but I think it will suffice to show you the latest one, from the lovely ladies at Shape Shiftr. For Spring 2011, the designers Meghan and J'aime were inspired by a trip across the country, Navajo Indians, rock art, wigwams, bones, skulls, and of course, dream catchers. They've thrown in a bit of Stevie Nicks witchyness, and their signature shape-shifting silhouettes, and the added edgy touch prevents the collection from falling into all the potential tourist-shop cliches that come with such well-traveled terrain. Anyway, here are a few amazing shots from their lookbook, as well as some good road trip music from the Crystal Stilts for good measure.

Vampire Dollies and Cat Queens from Outer Space!!!

No, they aren't the Cullens, but they are a gorgeous vampire clan

Every few months, I have to drop by my dear friend Andrew Yang's studio to check in, catch up on his whirlwind of a life, and see what crazy project he's up to next with his beloved Kouklitas. If you haven't heard, in the past three months Andrew has gone to Hong Kong to do an installation at Joyce, shown his designers dollies at Fashion's Night Out at Barneys New York, designed Anna Wintour and Grace Coddington dolls approved by Anna herself, and conducted a gallery installation of art dolls at SHOWstudio in London. I got a little winded just writing all that down in one sentence, so you can imagine how crazed Andrew has been, especially since he's been doing all of this while simultaneously fabricating his beautiful dollies.

Christina and I stopped to discuss the dolls he's making for us (we made him some doll-sized jewelry for trade), and while we were there, got a peek at some of the newest members of the ever-growing Kouklita clan. Andrew introduced us to his first boy-dolls, who are a part of a larger group of vampire-dollies, who all have fierce fangs and goth attire. He also showed us his Cat Queens From Outer Space, which are covered in millions of hand-embroidered beads and sequins. We caught him in the process of making a bunch of dolls for his former employer, furrier Dennis Basso, including a very accurate depiction of Naomi Campbell (I'm sure she'd approve). Here's a peek!

It's hard to see, but this Cat Queen is wearing a fully hand-embroidered body suit with an attached cape!
